Fauna
and Flora International (FFI) led by Mr. Josh Kempinski, FFI Vietnam Country
Director, had a meeting with the Provincial People's Committee on continuing to
implement the Cao Vit Gibbon Conservation Project Trung Khanh (Cao Bang).
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Trung Thao speaks at the meeting.
Attending
the meeting were leaders of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of
Agriculture and Rural Development, Provincial Forest Protection Department. Vice
Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Trung Thao chaired the
meeting.
The
Conservation Area, which was established for Cao Vit gibbon conservation under
the Decision No. 2536/QD-UBND dated November 15 2006 by Cao Bang Provincial
People's Committee, covers 1.656,80 hectares locating on the territory of Ngoc
Khe, Ngoc Con and Phong Nam communes in Trung Khanh district.
It
was not until 2002 that scientists, through the research and statistics of FFI,
rediscovered a flock of this gibbon species of 26 individuals living in the
forest. According to recent statistics on Cao Vit gibbon, there are about 22
flocks with about 134 individuals. The habitat of the Gibbon is well protected
and there have not been any threats to the existence of Cao Vit Gibbon recorded
till now, which is a good indication for the long-term recovery and development
of the Cao Vit gibbons.
At
the meeting, Mr. Josh Kempinski highly appreciated the efforts of the province
in the process of project coordination. In the coming time, FFI hopes to
continue implementing the project with higher goals including expanding the
conservation area to ensure the development of the gibbons; to set up a Project
Management Board, from part-time to full-time, focusing on monitoring
activities of Cao Vit gibbon to collect data on this rare primate species; to develop
a conservation plan in combination with tourism development to promote Cao Vit
gibbons; to study the creation of new populations for herd separation in order
to enrich the ecosystem.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's
Committee Nguyen Trung Thao highly appreciated the new proposals of FFI; He
also affirmed that the province would work closely with FFI to implement projects
for conserving and developing this rare primate species. He noted that the
project construction should take into account the goal of supporting the
economic development of the people in the project area so that the project can
develop effectively and sustainably.
